Mercedes-Benz LexingtonLuxury Sports Cars Attract Flings But Not Marriage - Every car conjures up an association. An SUV might say “family car,” while a hybrid might evoke an image of a tree-hugging environmentalist. Likewise, a luxury sports car has been painted as a “chick magnet.” A new study, recently published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, a publication of the American Psychological Association, confirmed that the latter is actually true – men who own flashy sports cars are more successful getting dates. Find out about other dealer services at Mercedes-Benz Lexington. According to the study, while women may date men who drive luxury sports cars, they don’t consider the same men to be desirable marriage partners. The researchers, located in Texas and Minnesota, studied almost 1,000 people to determine the signals that are sent out by spending behavior. They found that while men used spending on luxury items as a signal for short-term mating, women didn’t spend to attract men.

In two of the studies, men were made to think about romance. In one study, they were shown photos of attractive woman and were told they were members of a dating service. If the men were interested in casual dating, they were more likely to spend hypothetical money on ostentatious items than if they viewed the woman as someone they were interested in having a serious relationship with. The researchers found that women viewed a man who drove a flashy, expensive car such as a Porsche to be more desirable than the same man who bought an economy car like a Honda Civic. But the study says that women appear to be aware of a man’s intentions in owning the expensive car because women found the man with the Porsche to me more desirable as a casual fling than as a marriage partner.

Chevrolet Columbia

Daniel Beal, assistant professor of psychology at Rice University in Houston, Texas, and co-author of the study said that when women considered a partner for long-term relationships, the sports car didn’t provide any benefits to the man. “When women considered him for a long-term relationship, owning the sports car held no advantage relative to owning an economy car,” he said. “People may feel that owning flashy things makes them more attractive as a relationship partner but, in truth, many men might be sending women the wrong message.” Chevrolet Columbia has all the information you need when purchasing a new car. The study likens men who show off expensive luxury items like Porsches in order to attract prospective sexual partners to peacocks who display their tail feathers to catch the attention of potential mates.

A perfect illustration of the results of the study can be found in an article at AskMen.com. Contributor Curt Smith details his dating experiences while he owned a Honda Civic hatchback. Smith, who had little success on a succession of dates, related an attractive woman’s response when he attempted to talk to her while their cars were stopped at a red light: “Just as the first words were about to come out of my mouth, she interrupted me with, ‘Look you big loser, stop looking at me from your ‘kiddy’ car and get yourself a real car.’” After Smith bought a Porsche Boxter S, he found that his dating life had changed dramatically. “I’ve been driving my Porsche for a year now and meeting women has never been easier. I always get past the second date; I always get second and even third glances from women; and I never have to ask for a phone number. All these drastic changes stem from the fact that I’m driving a different and more exotic car. I’m still the same guy: I dress and groom myself the same way I always have…but all of a sudden, I’m a good man because I’m driving a different car.”

Volkswagen BarrieThe study said that the men who used this strategy were interested in having short-term sexual encounters with women. Women, on the other hand, don’t spend excessively to try to attract men. “Obviously women also spend plenty of money on expensive things,” said Jill Sundie, lead author of the study and assistant professor of marketing at University of Texas at San Antonio. “But the anticipation of romance doesn’t trigger flashy spending as it does with men.” Volkswagen Barrie provides excellent service for new car shoppers. These findings are in sync with a study that was published in 2008 in the journal Evolutionary Psychology. That study concluded that men who were less likely to save money and lived beyond their means reported having more sexual partners in the previous five years and wanted more partners in the future than the other men who took part in the study. The 2008 study also showed that spending money wasn’t significantly related to the number of past or future mates.

Indianapolis Used Car DealersIIHS Analysis: SUVs Getting Safer - While the chances of being killed in a crash in all types of passenger vehicles have been greatly reduced in recent years, SUVs have seen the most dramatic change. In the past, SUVs had some of the highest driver death rates because their high center of gravity often caused them to roll over. But a new report published by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) that analyzed driver death rates states that SUV drivers are now among the least likely to die in a crash. To learn more about other dealer services, visit Indianapolis Used Car Dealers. The change is attributed to the availability of electronic stability control (ESC), which helps prevent rollovers. With the threat of rollovers reduced, SUVs are now safer than cars because their larger size and weight provide more protection in a crash.

Electronic stability control is a technology that improves a vehicle’s stability by detecting and minimizing skids. When ESC detects loss of steering control, it automatically applies the brakes to help keep the vehicle on its intended path. Braking is automatically applied to wheels individually to counter oversteer or understeer. The federal government has issued a safety standard requiring electronic stability control on all new passenger vehicles starting with 2012 models. “The rollover risk in SUVs used to outweigh their size/weight advantage, but that’s no longer the case, thanks to ESC,” said Anne McCartt, the senior vice president for research at the institute.

Chevrolet Dealers Columbia

The IIHS performs this analysis every few years to identify differences in the on-road safety of different kinds of vehicles, and to track changes in the safety of the fleet over time. The previous analysis was in 2007. The latest analysis, which covered the 2005-08 model years and ran from 2006 through 2009, showed an overall death rate of 48 deaths per million registered vehicles. This is compared with 79 deaths per million in the 2007 analysis, a 39 percent decline. Chevrolet Dealers Columbia is an invaluable resource for automotive information. The 2007 analysis ran from 2002 through 2005 and covered vehicles from the 2001-04 model years. However, the decline in death rate is most pronounced among drivers of SUVs, with a 57 percent drop, from 65 deaths per million in the 2007 study to just 28 in the new report.

During 2006-09, the overall driver death rate for 2005-08 model was 48 per million registered vehicle years. Death rates for each of the more than 150 vehicles span a huge range. At the low end, seven models had 0 deaths, while there 143 for the Nissan 350Z sports car. Looking at vehicles by class, as might be expected, minvans had the best record, with a driver death rate of 25. SUVs scored second-best with 28. Pickups averaged 52 driver deaths per million registration years, while cars averaged 56, with smaller cars faring worse than large cars. For example, 4-door minicars have a death rate of 82, compared with 46 for very large 4-doors. Weight isn’t the only factor that gives SUVs an advantage – height and other factors come into play. When cars and SUVs of similar weight are compared, the SUVs have lower death rates.

St George Chrysler Dodge Jeep DealersWhile there isn’t hard evidence that electronic stability control is the reason for the reduction in deaths among SUV drivers, the IIHS is convinced that ESC is the principle cause. The institute’s research shows that stability control systems reduce fatal single-vehicle crash risk by 49 percent and fatal multiple-vehicle crash risk by 20 percent for cars and SUVs. They lower the risk of a deadly crash by 33 percent overall and cut the risk of a fatal single-vehicle rollover by 73 percent. St George Chrysler Dodge Jeep Dealers is a great source for all your automotive needs. The report also refers to the fact that the death rate among SUV drivers recently has fallen much faster than those of car drivers, and this change parallels the increasing availability of electronic stability control. While SUVs have been redesigned with lower chassis that make them less prone to rollovers and automakers are moving to unibody frames instead of body-on-frame setups, many body-on-frame passenger vehicles, such as the Jeep Wrangler, Nissan Armada and Xterra, have the lowest death rates. At the same time, vehicles with the highest death rates are all cars and pickup trucks.

Boston NissanTips For Renting a Car - Not too long ago, vacation travelers comprised the largest segment in the rental car business. Today, the growing segment of the car rental industry is consumers who rent cars in city where they live. People rent cars in their home cities for different reasons. To learn more about other dealer services, visit Boston Nissan. Some need a truck or van to facilitate a short-distance move. Others rent RVs such as toyhaulers or campers for cross-country trips. Still others want a glitzy car they can drive around for a night out. But with gasoline prices spiraling out of control and the possibility of gas hitting $5 a gallon this summer, it’s a good idea to watch your pocketbook when you rent a car. If you plan on renting a car soon, these rental tips can save you time and money.

The first tip is probably the most obvious: shop around. You can usually find the best car rental rates on the Internet. In addition to being able to compare rates, you can also sometimes find discount rates. If you do your homework, you can practically be guaranteed to find the best rates available. Besides rates, another advantage to using the Internet to do your research is that it’s faster and easier than making numerous phone calls to car rental agencies. Websites like Rentalcars.com, Rentalcarmomma.com, Rentalcodes.com, and Rentalcarchoices.com offer discount coupons on car rentals. Other general coupon sites like RetailMeNot have discount coupons for just about every product and service imaginable, including car rental companies. In addition to getting rates, the Internet is useful for checking out consumer ratings. Yelp is a good place to start. You can also go to the Better Business Bureau’s website to get the company’s rating and to see if there are unresolved complaints.

Chevrolet Dealer Nashville

If you’ve ever rented a car, you probably already know that if you don’t return the car with a full tank of gas, the rental car company will fill the tank and then charge you for the extra gas – through the nose. Some car rental companies charge as much as $9 a gallon, which is about twice as much as it would have cost to fill the tank yourself. If a gas tank holds 14 gallons, and you return the car with a quarter tank, at $9 a gallon, the charge would be almost $95! So always fill the tank before you return the car. If you don’t know your way around the area, make note of a gas station near the airport, or use GPS to find the closest gas station. AAA offers a free iPhone app that can display the nearest gas stations along with their prices. Chevrolet Dealer Nashville is an invaluable resource for automotive information. Another way to save money on gas is to turn down a free upgrade to a larger car if all you need is a compact car. Car rental companies often offer free upgrades to larger cars because smaller cars are in high demand. By giving free upgrades to the larger cars, they’re ensuring they have a good supply of smaller cars. Since small cars get better gas mileage, if you opt for the upgrade, you’ll end up spending more money on gas.

While no one expects to get into an accident, they do happen. If you’re involved in an accident while driving a rental car, you’ll want to have the right amount and type of insurance to cover it. Before renting a car, contact your car insurance company and credit card company to determine what kind of insurance is already included by these companies. Car rental companies will offer you insurance that will cover you in the event of a collision as well as coverage that protects you against the company’s lost income while the car is being repaired. If your current coverage duplicates the offered coverage, you probably won’t need to buy the extra insurance from the rental company. However, most auto insurance policies don’t cover loss to the rental company for downtime if the car is damaged, so you may opt for the rental company’s coverage if you want to avoid paying the lost income charge.

Mazda Dealer MarylandYou can join a rental car company’s loyalty program to receive special deals and promotions that aren’t available to the public. Some companies’ loyalty programs offer benefits that will save you time by allowing you to get through the lines at the counter quickly. In some cases, you’ll be able to avoid the lines completely – you may even be able to go directly to the car. You can join the loyalty program even if you aren’t a frequent traveler and only rent a car occasionally. Mazda Dealer Maryland is a great source for all your automotive needs. If you’re a member of an airline frequent flyer program, check to see if the airline has a partnership with the car rental company that will allow you to earn frequent flyer miles by renting a car. In addition to the airlines, you may also be able to get rewards through your credit card company, hotel loyalty program, or through other companies. If you’re a AAA member, check to see if the company offers a AAA discount.

Palm Bay LincolnBritish Study: Electric Cars Won’t Save the Planet - With Ford ready to debut its new C-Max Energi electric car in 2012 to compete with the Chevy Volt, automakers are racing to create electric cars. The government encourages car-buyers to enter the electric car market because conventional wisdom says that electric cars are better for the environment than gasoline-powered cars, and we all want to do our part to fight climate change. More information on all types of cars is available at Palm Bay Lincoln. But a new British study says that electric cars aren’t as green as their supporters believe. In fact, electric cars can create higher emissions over the car’s lifetime than their gasoline-powered equivalent, partly due to the pollution created from the factories that manufacture electric car batteries.

The study was financed by the Low Carbon Vehicle Partnership (which is jointly funded by the British government and the UK auto industry) and prepared by Ricardo, a leading global provider of product innovation, engineering solutions, clean technology and strategic consulting. It found that while in the past, tailpipe emissions have been used as the main measure of an electric car’s carbon footprint, when the emissions from the car’s total lifespan are taken into consideration, including the car’s production and disposal, some of the CO2 savings made from driving the car are offset. The study contends that “overall electric and hybrid vehicles still have lower carbon footprints than normal cars.” Ricardo Chief Technology & Innovation Officer and Chairman of the LowCVP, Prof. Neville Jackson, said “There is an emerging consensus that we need to move towards a more holistic analysis of whole life CO2 emissions in order to make more informed and better long term decisions on future technologies.”

Peoria Chevrolet

The British study found that a mid-size electric car produces 23.1 metric tons of CO2 over its lifetime. A similar gasoline-powered car produces 24 metric tons. But an electric car wouldn’t begin to save more CO2 than a conventional car until it had driven about 80,000 miles. And many electric cars will never reach 80,000 miles because they have a limited range (typically less than 90 miles on a charge) and they aren’t suitable for long trips. Peoria Chevrolet offers value and service for all your automotive needs. Furthermore, electric car batteries need to be replaced after about four years. When the emissions linked with a replacement battery are factored in, the total CO2 resulting from manufacturing an electric car increases to 12.6 metric tons, compared with only 5.6 metric tons for a gasoline-powered car. Disposal produces double the emissions because of the amount of energy consumed in recovering and recycling the metals in the battery.

“Life cycle analysis is still in its infancy, with little defined process and standards,” said Jackson. “The Low Carbon Vehicle Partnership report is an important contribution to this type of analysis and highlights the need to work toward a common methodology and approach to deliver consistent and robust life cycle data on CO2 emissions.” Greg Archer, LowCVP Managing Director, said: “This work dispels the myth that low carbon vehicles simply displace emissions from the exhaust to other sources. However, it does highlight the need to look at reducing carbon emissions from vehicles throughout their lifecycle. The automotive industry is already taking positive steps to address this issue – the recent announcement by Toyota of a solar array to provide electricity to power the hybrid Auris production facility and wind power at the Nissan Leaf plant are excellent examples of this.”

Saginaw GMArcher said the industry should state the full lifecycle emissions of cars, rather than just tailpipe emissions, to avoid misleading consumers. He said that drivers wanting to minimize emissions would be better off buying a small, efficient gasoline or diesel car. “People have to match the technology to their particular needs,” he said. Saginaw GM is a great source for all your automotive needs. It’s an unfortunate fact that nearly half the pollution from an electric car over its lifetime happens at the factory, before the vehicle has driven a single mile. Or as auto123.com put it, “Quite a few improvements need to be made for green vehicles to become truly green.” And while production techniques will no doubt improve over the next few years, one wonders if there will be an incentive for a battery plant in China to lower the pollution levels in their manufacturing process.

Honda Dealer HoustonNew U.S. Carbon Fiber Production Facility to Help BMW Create Lighter Cars - In a recent announcement, German carbon fiber manufacturer SGL Group and BMW Group said their joint venture, SGL Automotive Carbon Fibers LLC, has plans to build a state-of-the-art carbon fiber manufacturing plant in Moses Lake, Washington. The group will make an initial investment of $100 million and expects the facility to create 80 local jobs. The new manufacturing facility is an important component of the group’s plan to produce ultra-lightweight carbon fiber reinforced plastics to be used in BMW’s future vehicle concepts. Find out about other dealer services at Honda Dealer Houston. The carbon fiber produced at the Moses Lake plant will be used in the manufacture of BMW’s Megacity Vehicle, and urban transport vehicle, scheduled for debut before 2015. The Megacity will be assembled in Leipzig, Germany, but the announcement shows that a major component of the Megacity Vehicle will be produced in the United States.

The availability of renewable clean hydropower and competitive energy costs in the state of Washington were the primary reasons behind the decision to build the carbon fiber plant in Moses Lake. “This new plant in Moses Lake is a milestone in the use of carbon fibers for large scale production in the automotive industry,” said Robert Koehler, CEO of SGL Group. “It will be the world’s most cost efficient carbon fiber plant using state-of-the-art technologies. This significant investment further underlines our commitment to the U.S., where we already operate carbon fiber and composite materials plants. The manufacture of carbon fibers is a core business for SGL Group and together with our partner BMW Group, we will ensure that carbon fibers play a revolutionary role in lightweight automotive construction.”

Ford Lincoln Dealer Dayton

BMW is the first automobile manufacturer to build its own carbon fiber manufacturing facility. Owning the production process assures that BMW will have access to a supply of carbon fiber. It also allows the automaker to lower its expenses by developing less expensive production methods. Carbon fiber currently costs about 20 times more than steel, and is about 50 percent lighter. Because electric batteries add weight to electric cars, BMW plans to use the carbon fiber material to reduce vehicles’ overall weight. Ford Lincoln Dealer Dayton has all the information you need when purchasing a new car. Audi and Mercedes-Benz are reported to be looking to obtain a source of carbon fiber. While BMW has partnered with SGL Carbon SE to build the new carbon fiber plant, Volkswagen (which owns Audi) has bought 9.9 percent of SGL in order to ensure its own access.

“We consider carbon fiber a cutting-edge material,” said Friedrich Eichiner, Member of the Board of Management, Finance, BMW AG. “Our joint efforts will make sustainable mobility possible in urban environments. Acting sustainably is part of our corporate strategy. Our focus includes the whole value chain. Therefore, the energy demand for producing carbon fiber will come from environmentally friendly hydropower. Lightweight construction is a core aspect for sustainable mobility improving both fuel consumption and CO2 emissions, two key elements of our EfficientDynamics strategy. With using CFRP components in our Megacity Vehicle, we take sustainable mobility a step further. By combining the knowhow of SGL Group and our expertise in manufacturing CFRP components, we will be able to produce carbon fiber enhanced components in large volumes at competitive costs for the first time. This is particularly relevant for electric-powered vehicles such as the Megacity Vehicle.”

Used Cars AlbuquerqueWeight is a significant concern for upscale car manufacturers due to the fact that a great deal of their earnings comes from sales of larger automobiles, which are less fuel efficient than small cars. Weight is even more of a priority for electric cars because of the added weight of the batteries. “In electric-mobility, the weight of the car will be a decisive factor,” said Eichiner. “There is a close correlation between low vehicle weight and range in electric cars.” In other words, the lighter the car, the farther it can drive on a single charge. Used Cars Albuquerque provides excellent service for new car shoppers. Until now, automakers haven’t used carbon fiber in car manufacturing because it involves drying times that are simply too slow to keep up with the speed of auto assembly lines. Airplane manufacturers such as Boeing have adopted the use of carbon fiber much earlier because they have a slower production rate and the structures they create with the reinforced plastic material are simpler in design. Because of its light weight, carbon fiber is used to manufacture items as diverse as hockey sticks, bicycles, fishing rods, and cellos.

Chevrolet Dealer Fond Du LacUsed Car Buyers May Not Be Notified of Recalls - According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the federal authority that oversees vehicle recalls, auto manufacturers recalled more vehicles in 2010 than any other year. But many cars and trucks that are recalled don’t end up getting repaired, which is a potentially dangerous situation for the vehicle’s driver, other drivers on the road, and pedestrians. Further dealer resources available at Chevrolet Dealer Fond Du Lac. A new study just released by a government watchdog agency says that some of the cars and trucks on used car dealers’ lots may have been recalled but not repaired because automakers don’t have to send the same recall notification to used car dealers that they send to their franchised new car dealers.

Of the more than 35 million used cars that were sold in 2009, 11 million were sold by used car dealers. The situation “could pose a significant risk to the safety of millions of vehicle drivers and may have a negative impact on recall completion rates,” the study said. “Many consumers may be unknowingly putting their lives at risk by purchasing a defective vehicle.” Used car dealers told investigators that part of the problem is that while all cars and trucks have vehicle identification numbers (VIN), there is currently no database that will allow them to look up a car’s VIN number to determine whether or not the vehicle has had any recall-related repairs that haven’t been performed.

Chevrolet Dealer Dayton

The Government Accountability Office (GAO) study pointed out that even if used car dealers or franchised dealers are aware of a recall, there’s currently no requirement for them to repair the cars before a sale or disclose the information to prospective buyers. Furthermore, the NHTSA doesn’t have the authority to order dealers to make the repair or to notify buyers about the recalls. Chevrolet Dealer Dayton is an invaluable resource for automotive information. In addition, the NHTSA doesn’t have the authority to require automobile manufacturers to inform used car dealers of recalls. In the 66-page report, the GAO said that the NHTSA should act to improve the repair rate of recalled vehicles. Its yearlong investigation was prompted by criticism of the agency’s handling of Toyota’s issues regarding sudden acceleration.

NHTSA estimates that an average of 70 percent of repairs made as the result of a recall are performed within 18 months of the recall. However, investigators said the average number of recall repairs from 2000 to 2008 was only 65 percent. The average varied significantly from year to year and it also varies considerably by manufacturer. The report, which didn’t mention any manufacturers by name, said that some manufacturers had more than a 90 percent average repair record for recalled vehicles, while one automaker averaged only 23 percent of repaired recalled vehicles. Still another manufacturer had 53 percent. The National Automobile Dealers Association said in a statement that its goal is to have 100 percent of recalled vehicles repaired. To that end, it appealed to used car owners to check with a franchise dealer who can search the manufacturer’s database to see if their vehicle had received all recall repairs.

Infiniti Dealer BostonWade Newton, a spokesman for the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers, said in a statement that consumers can either check directly with automobile manufacturers or search the NHTSA’s website, Safercar.gov, to see whether there is a recall pending for a specific model. “As automakers, we stand behind our products – in fact, no manufacturers stand behind their products as strongly as do automakers,” he said. “Recalls are part of our ongoing commitment to safety and customer satisfaction.” Infiniti Dealer Boston is a great source for all your automotive needs. However, since the government website isn’t searchable by a car’s VIN number, it’s not currently possible for used car owners to tell whether their particular vehicle has been repaired. The study recommends the safety administration make its vehicle recall database searchable by VIN number and it also makes the recommendation that the NHTSA ask Congress to give it the authority to ensure that used car buyers are notified of any recalls prior to sales. In addition, the GAO suggested that the NHTSA could use manufacturers’ data to identify the factors that make some recalls more or less successful than others in order to better target monitoring of recall campaigns and to identify best practices.

Clovis Hyundai DealersSlicing Through the Darkness with High Tech Lighting - Electric light bulbs and cars came about around the same time in the late 1800s, but not much changed from when headlamps were added to cars in the early 20th century until the introduction of modern halogen bulbs in the early 1960s. Various lens, bulb and reflector designs have been developed and tested to American and European standards, but until he introduction of HID headlamps in the early 1990s, the basic technology remained the same as it was back in 1915. Find out about other dealer services at Clovis Hyundai Dealers. High-intensity discharge headlamps , also known as xenon headlamps, are capable of producing more light output with less electrical load than an incandescent lamp, including halogen bulbs. The light produced is whiter and does a better job of illuminating the road and potential hazards, but increased glare has led to significant complaints. HID systems are also expensive, heavy and produce a lot of heat.

Cars have lights on them for two reasons: to see and be seen. While each goal has seen advances in technology in the more than 100 years that the automobile has been around, the driver’s ability to see at night is where the effort and the need have been greatest. Headlamp improvements have produced significant increases in the amount of quality of light projected in front of the vehicle. But necessary compromises have limited the ability of a single technology from providing clear, long distance vision. Too much light and/or too little focusing of the beam blinds oncoming drivers. Illuminating corners during night driving has been addressed with systems that swivel headlights into a turn based on steering input, while the addition of cornering lights that can be aimed up to 90 degrees left or right fill in more of the gap. But there still remains the issue of a driver being able to see hazards or pedestrians beyond the reach of headlights, especially with oncoming traffic.

Washington DC Acura Dealers

Although they’ve been around since the 1950s, widespread use in automotive lighting is a recent development become more prevalent during the past 10 years. LEDs have several advantages over other types of lamp, including long life, extreme vibration resistance and more compact assemblies. They also draw less electricity for the amount of light produced and reach full intensity faster than incandescent or HID lamps. Initial and most widespread use has been the installation of LED brake lamps, for which the more rapid illumination offers a safety advantage. Washington DC Acura Dealers offers value and service for all your automotive needs. By reaching full intensity 200 milliseconds (0.2 seconds) faster than a normal bulb, a following driver has more time to react. While two-tenths of a second doesn’t seem like much, at 65 mph it’s 19 feet of travel, which could be the difference between stopping and striking the vehicle ahead. Some vehicles use LED turn signals, however the vast majority of tail and directional lamps still use incandescent bulbs. Advances in reflector and lens designs have improved the performance of these lights.

When it comes to LED headlamps, things get more complicated. While individual LEDs don’t produce much heat, large combinations of them producing enough light to be used as headlamps require thermal management, such as heat sinks and/or cooling fans. Heat from LEDs isn’t emitted with the light, but generated at the back of the emitters. There are a few vehicles using the technology, which first hit the market on the 2008 Lexus LS 600h with low-beam, position and side marker lamps using LEDs. High beam and turns signals used filament bulbs. The 2011 Audi R8 5.2 offers full LED lighting front and rear, the first production car to do so.

Boston Toyota DealersThe solution to seeing further in the dark has long been to use brighter lights, but this carries the significant disadvantage of blinding oncoming drivers. Enter infrared night vision systems, which offer a view beyond headlights while picking out animals and pedestrians more clearly from other objects. Systems have been developed and are offered by several manufacturers, including Cadillac, Mercedes-Benz and BMW. Basic components of such systems are a camera that captures only infrared light and means of displaying the image. Active systems add their own source of infrared light, such as a laser, while passive systems rely on a thermo graphic camera to render the heat generated by the objects themselves. Boston Toyota Dealers has knowledgeable and friendly staff for whatever you are looking for. Higher resolution, a better picture of inanimate objects and better operation in warm conditions are some of the advantages of an active system, while shorter range – 650 feet – and less effectiveness in rain and fog are some of the drawbacks. Passive systems offer greater range – about 1,000 feet – and higher contrast for living objects, but the image resolution is lower and performance suffers in warm weather. Regardless of type, a night vision system allows the driver to see further while using low beams only and thereby not dazzling oncoming drivers. More recent systems use software to identify and highlight pedestrians. Photos: Ford Motor Co., BMW, Hella Inc.

AAA Top Picks for Dog-Friendly Cars

by admin on June 9, 2011

RAM Truck Des MoinesAAA Releases List of Best Cars for Dog Owners - Everyone knows that Americans love their pets. According to The Humane Society, in 2009, there were an estimated 93.6 million pet cats and about 77.5 million dogs in the United States. While cats may be more popular, when it comes to enjoying a ride in the family car, dogs win every time. Ask a cat if he wants to go for a ride in the family car he’ll just look at you blankly. On the other hand, a dog will answer the same question with the same amount of excitement as if you told him he just won a year’s worth of steaks. Further dealer resources available at RAM Truck Des Moines. AAA says that more than 80 percent of people who own dogs take them along in their vehicles while doing errands, going for leisure drivers, and on day trips. Because dogs are so important to so many people, it’s only natural that many car buyers consider the safety and comfort of man’s best friend when they choose a car.

“More than 45 million households in the U.S. have a dog, and many are taking Fido along for the ride on a regular basis,” said John Nielsen, AAA National Director of Auto Repair and Buying Services. “There are several vehicles with features that can help keep pets safe, comfortable and easy to clean-up after while also addressing other driver desires such as sportiness, adventure or luxury.” To help dog-owning drivers find a vehicle that meets their needs, as well as the needs of their dogs, AAA recently released a list of its top vehicle picks for dog owners. AAA’s team of experts compiled their picks based on a number of factors, including crash test ratings, safety features, fuel economy, ease of getting the dog in and out of the vehicle, the size of the cargo area, availability of tie-down hooks, and how easy the interior was to clean. The list is divided into six categories to help a variety of types of motorists find the right vehicle for their needs that will keep drivers, passengers, and their canine companions safe and comfortable on the road.

Hyundai Los Angeles

In the “Active Lifestyle” category, AAA picked the Subaru Forrester, saying it “offers roomy, comfortable accommodations for people and their pets.” Features include all-wheel drive, great cargo space, a low floor that helps dogs get in and out more easily, and ample tie-down points. Their second pick was the Hyundai Santa Fe, which they liked for its good ride and handling, enough cargo space to hold larger dogs, and available options like rubber mats, beds, and pet dividers. Hyundai Los Angeles offers value and service for all your automotive needs. In the “Luxury” category, the first offering is the BMW 3 Series Wagon, which AAA liked for its handling and agility, as well as its comfortable and quiet ride. Among the dog-friendly features are rubber mats in the cargo area, dividers to keep dogs from away from the driver, and an optional divider that can separate two dogs. AAA calls the 3 Series a good choice for medium to small breeds. The Volvo XC60 was the group’s next pick. AAA liked the XC60′s “City Safe” feature, which applies brakes automatically if it senses a collision at low speeds. They also liked the roomy cargo area, rubber mats, and a pet barrier.

In the category called “Kids, Dogs & Everything Else,” AAA picked the Honda Element. They noted that while the vehicle was originally designed for young men, a number of features make it ideal for transporting dogs, including the ability to hose out the interior, clamshell side doors that make it easy for dogs to get in and out, the ability to tie down a soft-sided kennel, spill-resistant water dish, and electric ventilating fan. AAA also liked the handling and said the car is suitable for larger breeds. Their next pick in the category was the Toyota Venza, which features a quiet ride along with numerous offered pet accessories, including a ramp for getting dogs in and out through the rear tailgate, waterproof seat covers, adjustable pet restraint system, adjustable pet barrier, and tether.
